Frequently Asked Questions

How warm are the Reima Lapases Mittens?
These are a substantially insulated winter mitten. They have 170g PrimaLoft® Silver insulation, a soft fleece lining, and even double insulation over the back of the hand, where kids can really feel the cold. We like them for cold winter days, skiing, Outdoor School, sledding, and kids who spend enough time outside that a lightly insulated mitten just isn't going to cut it.
Are the Reima Lapases Mittens actually waterproof?
Yes. The Lapases have a waterproof insert inside the mitten, and Reima describes the finished product as waterproof. That makes them a great option for normal snow play, including digging, building snow forts, and handling wet snow. One important distinction: waterproof winter mittens aren't the same thing as PU rain mittens. If your child is playing in puddles, standing water, or extremely wet slush for extended periods, we recommend PU-style mittens designed specifically for that kind of prolonged water contact.
Why choose mittens instead of gloves for cold winter days?
For younger kids especially, we generally reach for mittens when warmth is the priority. Keeping the fingers together allows them to share warmth instead of separating each finger as a glove does. Kids also don't need individual finger dexterity for most snow play. If your child is building, sledding, climbing, or spending a long stretch outside in the cold, a well-insulated mitten like the Lapases is often our first choice.
Will these hold up to kids who are hard on their mittens?
They're built with that kind of play in mind. The ReimaTec Duraplus shell has an 80,000 abrasion-resistance rating, and Reima reinforces both the palm and thumb—the areas that take a lot of abuse when kids grab sleds, climb, carry sticks, and play on rough surfaces. No mitten is indestructible, but durability is one of the reasons we'd choose the Lapases for kids who are outside frequently.
What is the extra wrist strap for?
It's one of those small features that parents may end up appreciating a lot. In addition to the adjustable closure that secures the mitten around the wrist, the Lapases has a retention strap that helps keep the mitten attached to your child when they take it off. Think ski lifts, getting in and out of the car, adjusting gear, or taking a mitten off to grab something. It doesn't make them impossible to lose—but it certainly gives kids fewer opportunities to leave one behind.
