Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Reima Kaaranka warm enough for winter?
Yes. The Kaaranka has 140g Fellex® Eco insulation, and Reima gives it a temperature guideline of approximately 35°F to -5°F (0°C to -20°C). We like that range because it makes the Kaaranka useful for a lot of real winter days—not just the coldest ones. What your child wears underneath can be adjusted based on the temperature, activity level, and how naturally warm or cold they run.
Is the Reima Kaaranka really waterproof?
Yes. Unlike jackets that use waterproof fabric but leave the seams untaped, the Kaaranka has fully taped seams and ReimaTec fabric with a water column over 10,000 mm. That makes the finished jacket waterproof and a strong choice for falling snow, wet snow, sledding, outdoor school, and the messy winter conditions kids tend to find.
Is the Kaaranka just a ski jacket, or can my child wear it every day?
Definitely both. The Kaaranka has the features we want for skiing—including a helmet-compatible hood, snow lock, and ski-pass pocket—but none of those make it impractical for everyday use. We’d be just as comfortable choosing it for school, recess, sledding, outdoor learning, or weekend adventures. For families who ski but don't want to buy a separate ski coat, that's a big plus.
How does the Reima Kaaranka fit, and should I size up for layers?
Reima describes the Kaaranka as having a straight cut, and the smooth lining is designed to work with warm layers underneath. We wouldn't automatically size up just to accommodate a fleece or other normal winter midlayer. Reima sizing is based primarily on your child's height in centimeters, so start with their current height and check the size chart rather than choosing a larger size solely for growing room.
Is the Kaaranka a good choice for active kids who get hot while playing?
Yes. This is one of the reasons we'd choose a technical winter jacket like the Kaaranka over a very heavy coat for an active child. In addition to being waterproof and windproof, the fabric has breathability over 7,000 g/m²/24h, helping moisture escape as kids ski, climb, hike, and play. You can then adjust the layers underneath depending on whether the day involves high-energy snow play or a slower, colder activity.
