Frequently Asked Questions

How warm is the Reima Paimio Down Jacket?
The Paimio is one of Reima’s very warm winter jackets, earning its highest 3/3 warmth rating. Reima provides a temperature guideline of approximately 20°F to -20°F (-10°C to -30°C). We like it for genuinely cold winter days when kids need serious warmth but don’t want to feel weighed down by a bulky coat. Keep in mind that temperature ratings are a guide—layers, wind, activity level, and how warm your child naturally runs all make a difference.
Is the Reima Paimio waterproof?
This one is a little confusing, so it’s worth explaining. The fabric itself has a water column over 10,000 mm and a water- and dirt-repellent finish, but the jacket’s seams are not taped. That means water can eventually enter through the seams, so Reima does not classify the finished jacket as waterproof. We’d choose the Paimio for cold, dry winter weather and occasional snow or moisture—not long days in rain, slush, or very wet snow.
Is down a good choice for kids who are active outside?
It can be, especially when you want a lot of warmth without a lot of weight. The Paimio uses a 550-fill-power down-and-feather blend, giving it a warm, lightweight feel. The outer fabric is also highly breathable at over 7,000 g/m²/24h, which helps manage moisture when kids are walking, exploring, and playing. For very high-output activities or consistently wet conditions, we may choose a different type of winter system.
What should my child wear underneath the Paimio?
Probably less than you might expect. Because the Paimio already has Reima’s highest warmth rating, start with a good wool or technical base layer and adjust from there. A midlayer can be added on especially cold or lower-activity days, but active kids may not need one in milder winter temperatures. The goal is to keep them comfortably warm without adding so many layers that they get sweaty.
Who is the Paimio a particularly good winter jacket for?
We’d choose the Paimio for a child who needs serious cold-weather warmth but doesn’t love a heavy, bulky winter coat. It’s a great everyday option for cold school mornings, winter walks, playground time, family adventures, and outdoor play in predominantly cold, dry conditions. If your child regularly spends hours outside in wet snow, slush, or rain, we’d steer you toward one of Reima’s fully waterproof, seam-sealed winter jackets instead.
