Frequently Asked Questions

Why do kids need technical winter socks instead of regular socks?
The right sock can make a surprisingly big difference in how warm winter boots feel. Kids' feet can get sweaty when they're running, climbing, and playing, and that moisture can eventually make feet feel colder. The Urheilu combines merino wool with technical fibers to provide warmth while helping manage moisture—something an everyday cotton sock isn't designed to do as well.
How warm are the Reima Urheilu Winter Socks?
The Urheilu contains 35% merino wool and has a soft, warm terry interior for additional comfort and warmth inside winter boots. Merino is especially useful for kids because it can continue to provide warmth even when it becomes moist. We like these for everyday cold-weather wear, Outdoor School, sledding, winter walks, and long stretches of outdoor play.
Should my child wear two pairs of socks when it's really cold?
We generally recommend one good winter sock rather than doubling up. Two pairs can take up valuable space inside the boot and create a tighter fit, which can actually work against keeping feet comfortable and warm. Start with a properly fitting winter boot and one technical merino-blend sock like the Urheilu, then make sure your child still has room to comfortably move their toes.
Are the Urheilu socks a good choice inside waterproof winter boots?
Yes. In fact, Reima specifically recommends them for cold conditions and waterproof footwear. Waterproof boots help keep outside moisture away from feet, while the merino-and-technical-fiber sock helps manage the moisture kids create inside their boots as they move. Those two pieces work together as part of a good winter footwear system.
What is the difference between the Reima Urheilu and Atleetti socks?
Both are technical merino wool-blend socks with warm terry interiors, moisture-management benefits, and reinforcement at the sole, heel, and toe. The Urheilu contains 35% merino wool, compared with 28% in the Atleetti, and is positioned as a versatile technical winter sock. The Atleetti is specifically described as a ski sock. For everyday winter boots and general cold-weather adventures, we'd reach for the Urheilu; for a sock specifically intended for ski days, look at the Atleetti.
