Kids Fishing Kit – Huckleberry by Kikkerland – Handline with Hook & Bobber

The Huckleberry Fishing Kit by Kikkerland is a pocket-size handline set for first fishing trips—250 inches of line, a hook, and a bobber, all wound on a little basswood holder shaped like a fish.

There is no rod to carry. Kids find a good stick at the water's edge, tie on the line, add bait, and cast. It is fishing at its simplest, and it teaches the patience that every angler needs.

Why Parents Love It

• Everything on one holder: Line, hook, and bobber wind neatly onto the fish-shaped holder.
• The stick is part of the fun: Finding the right branch to use as a rod turns setup into an adventure.
• Pocket-size: Small enough for a backpack, tackle box, or jacket pocket.
• A first real skill: Tying on, baiting, casting, and waiting—a classic outdoor skill in its most basic form.
• Thoughtful materials: The holder is FSC-certified basswood, and the kit comes in simple kraft card packaging.

Built for Real Outdoor Use

This is a kit for ponds, docks, slow creeks, and summer-camp lakes—anywhere a child can sit at the edge of the water with a grown-up and see what bites. Unwind the line, tie it to a stick, and let the waiting begin.

Some days it is about the fish. More often, it is about the dragonflies, the ripples, and an hour of quiet that kids do not usually get to have.

Things to Know

• Sharp hook: Kikkerland includes a caution about the sharp hook. Fishing should always be supervised by an adult.
• Contains lead: Kikkerland lists lead among the kit's materials and includes a California Proposition 65 warning. Wash hands after handling the tackle.
• No rod included: The kit is designed to tie onto a stick you find.
• Bait not included: Bring a worm or bait.
• Local rules: Check your area's fishing regulations before you go.

Why ODSS Recommends It

ODSS recommends the Huckleberry Fishing Kit for families who want to try fishing without buying a rod and reel first. It strips the skill down to its essentials and lets kids do the real thing, with a grown-up close by.

We especially like the stick. Choosing it, testing it, and declaring it the best fishing rod ever made is half the afternoon—and the other half is learning to wait.
