Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my child need a base layer under their snow gear?
A base layer does more than add warmth—it helps manage what happens inside all that winter gear. Active kids can work up a surprising amount of sweat while sledding, climbing, skiing, and playing. The Lani uses Thermolite® material to transfer moisture away from the skin, helping kids stay more comfortable as their activity level changes. We recommend wearing it directly against the skin as the first step in a good winter layering system.
What’s the difference between the Reima Lani and a merino wool base layer?
The Lani is a fully synthetic base layer, making it a great alternative to wool. We especially like it for highly active kids because Thermolite® is designed to move moisture away from the skin while providing lightweight warmth. Merino wool is an excellent choice for natural warmth and temperature regulation, while the Lani is a practical option when you want synthetic moisture management, easy layering, and no wool against the skin.
Is the Lani warm enough for really cold winter days?
The Lani is the first layer of the system, so you can build warmth around it as conditions change. On active or milder days, it may be all your child needs underneath insulated snow gear. On colder days, add a fleece or other insulating mid layer before their snowsuit, jacket, or snow pants. We prefer this approach because parents can adjust the layers instead of dressing kids in the same bulky combination all winter.
Is the Lani a good base layer for kids who sweat a lot?
Yes—this is one of the situations where we'd particularly consider the Lani. Thermolite® material is designed to transfer moisture away from the skin, which is important when kids alternate between running full speed and slowing down outside. Staying comfortable isn't just about piling on warmth; managing moisture is an important part of keeping active kids comfortable in winter.
Can kids wear the Lani for Outdoor School, skiing, and everyday snow play?
Absolutely. The Lani is designed for sports and active play, but you don't need to be headed to a ski hill to benefit from it. The soft flat seams, flexible construction, elastic waist, and longer back hem make it a comfortable first layer for Outdoor School, sledding, winter hikes, recess, skiing, and everyday snow days. It's the kind of winter basic we like because kids can wear it again and again across different activities.
