Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Reima Ensilumi a barefoot winter boot?
The Ensilumi is designed to give kids more natural movement than a traditional stiff winter boot. It has a minimalist construction and flexible rubber outsole that allows the foot to move more freely as kids walk, climb, and explore. For families who prefer barefoot-style footwear but still need real winter protection, the Ensilumi brings that flexibility into a warm, weather-ready boot.
re the Reima Ensilumi Winter Boots waterproof?
Yes. The Ensilumi has a seam-sealed waterproof bootie inside the boot that provides waterproof protection up to the ankle. That's especially useful for snowy playgrounds, wet snow, slushy sidewalks, and everyday winter adventures. Because the waterproof coverage ends at the ankle, we'd avoid deep puddles or water that can reach above that point—but for typical winter conditions, you're getting meaningful waterproof protection where kids need it most.
How warm are the Ensilumi boots?
The Ensilumi has textile-fur and fleece lining, and Reima has tested the footwear for insulation against cold down to -4°F (-20°C). That makes this a significantly warmer option than a transitional winter boot and one we'd consider for genuinely cold winter days. As with any temperature rating, your child's activity level, socks, weather conditions, and how naturally warm or cold their feet run will affect comfort.
Are barefoot winter boots a good choice for Outdoor School?
For kids who are comfortable in barefoot-style footwear, the Ensilumi has a lot going for it: flexibility, waterproof protection, cold-weather insulation, and winter traction in one boot. The flexible sole can be particularly nice for kids who spend their outdoor day walking, climbing, balancing, and exploring rather than simply standing around. We also like the elastic lacing for school because kids can get their boots on and adjusted quickly.
How do I know if my child has the right size?
Kids' shoe sizing can feel confusing, but it doesn't have to be. Start with the shoe size your child currently wears in their everyday or tennis shoes—winter boots are not sized by age. Kids' sizes typically run from baby/toddler sizes through size 13 and then start again at youth size 1, so don't be surprised by that jump in numbering. If you're unsure of your child's current size, ODSS created a free printable shoe sizing chart that makes it easy to measure their foot at home and find the right size before ordering. We recommend measuring rather than guessing based on age, especially if it's been a while since your child's last pair of shoes—little feet have a habit of growing when we're not looking.
